The Necessary Theatre
Founded in the spring of 1991, The Necessary Theatre is a company of theater artists whose primary mission is to produce new, and rarely seen, works for the stage.
Working out of the Boyd Martin Experimental Theater (The MeX) a fully equipped, black box theater in the Kentucky Center for the Arts, we've presented a wide range of plays, from lesser known pieces by Edward Albee and Beth Henley to some dozen premieres by new playwrights.
More than 150 Kentucky actors, designers, playwrights and directors have worked with the company. Susan Linville is the Managing Director and Tad Chitwood is the Artistic Director. We've also worked with Producer Joe Vincenza to create numerous pieces for Public Radio, including our first series, "Radio Soul".
The Necessary Theatre produces a diverse range of premieres and new interpretations of America's best contemporary theatre. Since our first production in 1991, we have dedicated ourselves to three guiding principles—quality, diversity, and community—and we continue to seek to be a major independent artistic voice in Louisville, developing productions that make an essential contribution to the quality of life in our city.
